Ethel Weaver

May 25, 1926 — November 5, 2015

Albany- Ethel Weaver, 89, passed away Thursday, November 5, 2015 after a brief illness in the comfort of her loving family.

Ethel was born on May 25, 1926 and was the daughter of the late Walter and Jesse Strope.

Ethel was a professional secretary who worked at the Voorheesville Army Depot where she met the love of her life and future husband of 57 years, the late Robert Weaver. Ethel left the workforce to raise her family before returning to work for Montgomery Ward and later as private secretary to retired Albany County Coroner Elmer Parker. She then became church secretary for the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, a position she held for many years. Ethel was instrumental in the merger that led to the formation of the New Covenant Presbyterian Church, remaining an active congregant for the newly formed church, holding the positions of Clerk of Session and Treasurer. Ethel worked for the Ecumenical Council of the Capital District helping to bring people of varied faiths together for worship.

Ethel, affectionately known as Mimi, had many interests and hobbies, among them gardening, sewing, knitting, and family genealogy. Mimi was an avid bowler, swimmer, and crossword and jigsaw puzzle enthusiast well into her eighties. Above all else, she cherished time spent with her family, friends, and her cat Sophia, but she would never miss her Saturday night lineup of British comedies on PBS.

Ethel is survived by her children, Joyce (George) Bouchard, David R. (Linda) Weaver, and Daniel J. (Patricia) Weaver; her grandchildren, Cindy (Jeff) Coons, Chris (Jenna) Weaver, M.D. and Kelly Weaver; great-granddaughter Lily Coons; sister Dorothy Knauer; sister-in-law Rose Weaver; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers Walter and Howard Strope.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at New Comer Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. Interment will follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Guilderland Center. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
