Salvatore Grasso, Sr.

December 16, 1940 — June 28, 2017

Scotia - Salvatore Grasso, 76, passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family.

He leaves his wife of 47 years, Concetta, his sons Carmelo (Amy) and Salvatore Jr., daughter Rosemarie (Matthew) Nichols and 4 grandchildren, Isabella and Julia Grasso, Lucas and Gianna Nichols. He is also survived by his brother Antonino Grasso, a cousin Bruno (Caterina) Ando, numerous nephews and nieces and many friends.

Salvatore was born in Catania, Italy on December 16, 1940 to Carmelo and Maria Grasso. He enjoyed a childhood filled with sports and friends. As a young adult, he served in the Italian Army as a Lieutenant, worked in the family antique store and ran a family-owned hotel business. He achieved academic honors by completing his college education with a degree in jurisprudence and was recognized for his fluency in Italian, French and English.

In 1969, Salvatore immigrated to the United States and married Concetta Zuppa on March 7, 1970. After purchasing a home in Scotia, Salvatore and Concetta began their family. Early on, Salvatore worked for Schenectady County as an Adult Basic Education Teacher assisting fellow Italian immigrants in developing their English language skills. Shortly thereafter, he began his 31 year career at General Electric. He enjoyed many accomplishments within the organization and felt honored to be a part of the GE Quarter Century Club.

Salvatore was immensely proud and passionate of his Italian heritage. For over 20 years, he was a member of the Sons of Italy and President of the Men's Sicilian Society in Schenectady. He was known as a celebrity in the local Italian community due to his participation as co-host of a public access television show entitled: "Bella Italia" and his Union College Italian radio show on Sunday mornings. He was also a sports enthusiast and super fan of Italian Serie A soccer and Italy's National Team, the Azzurri.

Salvatore will be sorely missed and will be remembered as a great husband, father, grandfather and friend who continually demonstrated care for others via his generosity and thoughtfulness.

The Grasso family would like to express gratitude for the care delivered by the Ellis Hospital medical team and Community Hospice of Amsterdam. Their compassion and level of service should be commended and is much appreciated.
