Troy- Maureen O'Leary McLain, 78, went home to join her loving husband, Nicholas E. McLain II on Sunday, February 11, 2018. Maureen passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the love of her family and full of memories of a life filled with love and adventure.
Maureen was born in Glens Falls, NY to the late Christine and Owen O'Leary. Maureen was the youngest of ten siblings. Maureen graduated from Albany High School, in Albany, NY. After graduation, Maureen enlisted in the Navy, where she became an Aviation Photographer. She met the love of her life in the Navy, Nicholas E. McLain II. Maureen and Nick went on to have four children. They moved to Mayfield, NY when Nick retired from naval service. The family lived in Mayfield for 50 years next to the best of neighbors, Nancy and Marshall Bates.
Maureen was the genealogist of the family who used her intellect and sleuthing skills to track down relatives and climbed the family tree back to the 1500s. She was a strong advocate for education and learning. Maureen and Nick volunteered countless hours supporting the family's love of canoeing and kayaking. They both served as judges and officials at national, international and Olympic competitions. Nick became "Coach" to all who knew him and Maureen was affectionally called "Mrs. Coach". Maureen and Nick were strong supporters of the Empire State Games, Schenectady Winter sports Club and the Northern New York Paddlers. She loved to travel and ventured to Europe with her sisters, Elaine and Daphne to track down various branches of the O'Leary and Ramberg family. She traveled solo to Seoul, Korea to cheer on her son, Rodney who competed in the 1988 Olympic games. Maureen loved being on the water, whether canoeing on the Sacandaga Lake or the ocean. She and Nick would sail their trimaran, Morning Wings, down the Hudson out to the Bahamas. They loved spending time in Abaco, Bahamas and at their mooring in Edenton, NC. Our parent's love of the water lives on in their children and grandchildren who love to sail and canoe. Maureen worked for 30 years as a rural postal carrier for the Gloversville Post Office. After retirement, Maureen and Nick became snowbirds escaping the cold to spend warm, happy times with good friends, Cindy and Gerhard Mengele in Spring Hill, Florida. Maureen was a talented artist who painted beautiful rural scenes. Her talent lives on in her grandchildren.
In addition to her loving husband and parents, Maureen was predeceased by siblings Elaine, Owen, sister in law Mary Sue, Daphne, brother in law Christopher, Frank, sister in law Mary, sister in law Kathy, Eugene, and sister in law Josephine.
Maureen left a legacy of love to her children who survive her, Rusty and wife Leza of Chesapeake, Virginia; Rodney and wife Roberta of Stockton, Maine; Amber and husband Stephen Renaldi, Sr of Troy, New York; and Gary and his wife Patricia of Malta, NY. Maureen and Coach had eight loving grandchildren: Kyle and his wife Aimee, Amy, Andrew, Alexandra, Mickey, Haley and husband, Chenhao Sun, Taylor and Brianna. Maureen also loved both of her great- granddaughters, Heaven and Madison. Maureen is also survived by her brothers Andrew, John, and sister in law Pauline.
