Poestenkill- John Scalzo, 77, entered eternal life at his home on Saturday, March 31, 2018.
Son of the late Josephine Libertucci Scalzo and Angelo Scalzo, he was born in Coeymans, and with his late wife, Anne Schmitt Scalzo raised five children.
John moved to Poestenkill in 1980 and shared the remainder of his life there with his partner and best friend of 38 years, Donna Young.
He worked for the NYS Department of Transportation Region 1 Office as an Engineer and Senior Land Surveyor, retiring in 1995 after 37 years of service. He subsequently worked for several engineering firms, the last being Vollmer Associates until 2007.
John was a former member of the Coeymans Fire Company, Eastern Society of Land Surveyors, RC Sportsman Club, life member of the NYS Transportation Engineers and member of the DOT Region 1 Golf League.
John is survived by Donna Young of Poestenkill; his son, John T. (Karen) Scalzo of Syracuse; four daughters: Cindy Scalzo (Henry Brown) of Chicago, Cheryl Jenner of Baltimore, Lynda (Cain) Scalzo of Albany and Joanne Scalzo (Jim Butterworth) of Albany. Joanne provided enormous emotional support and comfort to her father up to the moment of his death as well as selfless caretaking assistance throughout his 6 month battle with cancer.
Other survivors include a brother, Tom (Marcia) Scalzo; three sisters: Ginny (the late Brian) Ford of Clifton Park, Jane (Phil) Sprando of Oregon, June (Gary) Overdorf of Albany; seven grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours for family and friends will be held from 11 to 3 on Sunday April 8, 2018 at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 181 Troy Schenectady Road, Watervliet. A time of sharing personal memories will be held from 2 to 3 p.m., concluding with a moment of silent prayer.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in John's memory to The Community Hospice Foundation, 310 S. Manning Blvd., Albany, NY 12208.
