Colonie - Doris Nieman, a life-long resident of Colonie, NY, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2018, at St. Peter's Nursing Home. Born May 20, 1928, to Frederick and Doris (Mather) Karl, Doris was a widow of John R. Nieman with whom she shared twenty happy years.
After graduating from Albany High School, she became a bookkeeper at John G. Meyers of Albany. She married John in 1947. Together they welcomed three children: John, Robert, and Lori. Later she was employed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation as a clerk and purchasing agent, retiring in 1992.
Doris enjoyed gardening and was an avid square and round dancer. For many years, she was an active member of the Single Squares Club and Double A's in Colonie, NY.
Doris will be fondly remembered for her kindness, grace, and strength of character by her sons, John Nieman (Anna), Robert Nieman (Lorraine) and daughter, Lori Jacobs (Frederick); grandchildren Karly and Luke Nieman, Jennifer Hakes (Nathan), Katherine Keller-Nieman (Benjamin), Sarah Nieman, Amber Jacobs, Kimberly Prentiss (Roger); step-grandchildren Alice Selipanov and Gregory Richards, and great-grandson Warren Jacobs. She is also survived by her sister, Marjorie Platt (Karl) and several nieces and nephews.
Doris's family would like to express their gratitude to the staff and volunteers at St. Peter's Nursing Home and Community Hospice for the loving care they provided.
Visitation will be held at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie, on Friday, April 6 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. A Funeral Service will be held at the funeral home at 12 pm. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery.
