Watervliet- Michael Joseph Quinn, 86, formerly of Delmar, NY, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2018 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, NY. Born August 14, 1931 in Brooklyn, NY, the first in his family of Irish immigrants to be born in the United States, Mike began his long career of public service to his country at 14, joining the NY National Guard, followed by a tour of duty in the U.S. Navy, and 20 years as a member of New York's Finest (NYPD), where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant.
But family was always first and foremost in Michael's heart and as the father of six, and grandfather of 13, his greatest source of pride. Once his children were fully grown, he dedicated himself to charitable giving, particularly to causes that took care of children in need. He's now going to join the love of his life, his wife of 50 years, Rose Donnelly who passed away in 2013.
Mike is survived by his children Kevin, Maureen (Michael) Sovern, Michael (Mel), Steve (Judy), Karen (John) Sorady, and Brian. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Elizabeth & Kerin Sovern; Lauren Quinn; Collin, Erin & Quinn Sorady; Allyson & Gavin Quinn; Will & Emily Quinn; Danny, Brady & Christopher Quinn; his brother Bill (Phyllis); sister-in-law Eileen, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mike was predeceased by his parents, William and Mary, his brothers Tony (Mary) and Patrick, and his sisters Margaret (Patrick) Evans and Noreen (John) Griffin.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his calling hours on Sunday, May 20, 2018 from 2 to 5 p.m. at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 181 Troy Schenectady Road, Watervliet, NY 12189. A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, May 21 at 9 a.m. at St. Pius X Church, 23 Crumitie Road, Loudonville, NY 12211. Inurnment with full military honors will be held at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY on Tuesday, May 22 at 2:30 p.m.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Samaritan Hospital for their loving care for Mike in his final hours.
