Anthony J. Salerno

July 16, 1939 — March 30, 2022

Anthony Joseph Salerno (Tony), age 82, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2022 after a courageous 6-year battle with Alzheimer's.

Born July 16, 1939 in Oneida, NY Tony grew up with his four siblings (Lou, Cathy, Betty and Joe) and after graduating from Oneida High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. As a member of the 101st Airborne Division in Fort Campbell, KY, he earned his Parachute Badge and went on to successfully complete Radio and Signal schools. After 2 years of active duty, he was a member of the reserves until he was Honorably Discharged in August of 1964.

On July 13, 1963, Tony married the love of his life, Alma Jean Partridge and they eventually settled in Canastota, NY where they raised their family and lived for 40 years. Tony leaves behind his wife Jean, their 3 children, Joe Salerno (Melissa) of Portsmouth, RI, Al Salerno (Anne) of Cohoes, NY and Lisa Salerno (Joe Brown) of Castorland, NY as well as 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Tony is pre-deceased by his parents Joseph and Catherine Salerno, and his siblings, Lou Salerno and Cathy Hummel.

While Tony worked a number of jobs throughout his life, many of them concurrently, he worked at Carrier Corporation for 38 years, where he started as welder and retired as a Quality Engineer. Tony was active with his children as a little league coach and as a Scout Master for many years. In addition to liking auto repair and welding, he was an outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting.

Tony is remembered for his work ethic and quick wit, but most of all as an individual who would do anything for his family. Always ready with a sassy response, Tony took as good as he gave and he worked hard to squeeze the joy out of life, particularly after he retired.

Tony greatly enjoyed traveling and would think nothing of jumping into the car to take a last minute trip to see his grandchildren. He and Jean spent time exploring the country. Some of their most memorable trips include traveling to Disney World with their granddaughters; spending time in the Adirondacks with their grandson; taking long car trips to see family on the eastern seaboard; chasing road-runners in the deserts of southern California with his sister; spending time in Nashville and Las Vegas, and visiting the Grand Canyon. Their infamous trip to Hawaii, where Tony somehow convinced Jean to take a helicopter ride into a volcano, is a story that is still talked about to this very day.

A special thank you to the team at Ingersoll Place, and the private duty staff, all of whom made Tony's final journey as comfortable as possible. You all hold a special place in our hearts as honorary members of the "Salerno Family."
