Saratoga Springs- John Louis Romano of Saratoga Springs, NY. He was born April 1, 1942 in North Albany, NY to the late, Matthew and Dorothy (Voss) Romano.
He attended Albany High School. He joined the navy serving 4 years, honorably. He served on the Heavy Cruiser USS Canberra (CAG-2), Flagship of the 6th Fleet, in the North Atlantic. As a 3rd class Petty Officer, he had the distinct honor, as Boatswain's Mate, of calling the Canberra to General Quarters for Wartime Cruising during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He also served on the USS Stormes (DD-780).
John proudly served as a Firefighter in Albany for 27 years, retiring in 1991. He served at Ladder Company no. 1 in the south end of Albany for 19 of those years. He also served at Engine Companies 10, 11 and 4. He was awarded The Medal of Valor from the International Association of Firefighters and named Firefighter of the Year in 1976, the highest award in New York State, for rescuing a man while working in the capacity of Acting Lieutenant on Ladder Company 1.
He offered lawn care services and enjoyed gardening. He also enjoyed Country Line Dancing, he also looked forward to wintering in Bradenton, Florida.
John was predeceased by his brother Michael and sister Mary Ann Cady.
He is survived by his wife Dianne, sons Matthew (Jennifer) and Jon, stepchildren Denise (Daniel) Bruno and Vincent Migliozzi; grandchildren Kaydence, Emmie and Maverick Romano; step-grandchildren Anthony, Delaney and Hayley Bruno. A host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
