Bernice M. Callender

COLONIE-Bernice "Bernie" M. Callender, age 92, passed away on September 17, 2023 surrounded by family and friends.
She was born in Sharon, CT, the daughter of the late Hans and Helen Maier. She was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Robert G. Callender, Sr. in 2020. They have lived in the Village of Colonie since 1954.
Early in her career, Bernie worked for American Bell Telephone Co. in Albany, NY. Bernice later managed the cosmetics department at JC Penney in Clifton Park for 25 years, where she enjoyed helping people look their best.
She enjoyed the time that she spent weekly at the Colonie Village Senior Center, where she had many friends and enjoyed all of the activities, including playing pool. One of her passions was gardening. She loved planting and maintaining her annual and perennial flowers and plants, taking great pride in her
gardens and yard.
She had a very large network of friends, who she saw and talked to on a regular basis and she had many neighbors in the Village of Colonie, who were lifelong friends, cherished companions and were always there for her. She also stayed in close contact with her friends who lived far away via emails and frequent telephone calls. She was also a devoted NY Yankee fan and never missed a game on tv. She also loved her pets and was an avid animal lover.
Bernie is survived by her sons: Bob (Susan) and Rick; grandchildren: Jack, Caroline and Emme; siblings: Anne Zweig and Tony (Elaine) Maier; nieces and nephews: Brian Zweig, Susan Zweig, Rob Zweig, Sandy Zweig, Greg Zweig, Sharon Meresman, Dale Young, Brian Callender and Scott Callender. Also survived by her feline companion Toby.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her calling hours on Thursday, September 21, 2023 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie, NY 12205. All are invited to attend her Celebration of Life following at 11:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bernie's memory may be made to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, 3 Oakland Avenue, Menands, NY 12204.
