Agnes M. Spiegel

1945 — 2024

Schenectady - Agnes M. Spiegel (Paton), 79, passed away Thursday, October 10, 2024, with her loving family by her side. Agnes was the daughter of the late David and Doris Paton. Agnes was the devoted wife to Thomas W. Spiegel who passed away in 2019. They were married for 54 years at the time of his passing and are now reunited in heaven to continue their 59th year of marriage.

Agnes was born in Schenectady and grew up in Rotterdam. She graduated from Draper High School in 1963. While attending Draper High School Agnes was on the cheerleading team. She loved to tell her stories of her cheerleading days as well as all of the wonderful memories she made with her best friend Karen. She spent every summer and parts of the winter at her family camp at Galway Lake. She loved to talk about her countless memories she made there. She made her memories at the lake alongside of her cousin MaryEllen who was more like her sister. After graduating high school, Agnes continued her education at Spencer Business School. She then went on to work in the credit union at Barney’s Department Store in Downtown Schenectady. While working there, a coworker at Barney’s, Wesley Spiegel played match maker and introduced her to his son, Thomas Spiegel. From that moment on their love for each other never strayed. For a short time, Agnes also worked as a ward clerk at Ellis Hospital.

Thomas and Agnes were married on May 15, 1965. They had two beautiful daughters, Kimberly and Nancy. While raising their daughters, they were members of Broadway United Methodist Church. Agnes served in the church not only as a Sunday school teacher but also sang in the church choir.

Agnes’ hobbies were gardening and embroidering. Agnes had great enjoyment while working in her beautiful flower garden. When the sun went down you would find Agnes working on embroidery projects, never for herself, but always for her family. Agnes was blessed with wonderful neighbors, the Cooke’s and Rita. Agnes and Rita were the best of friends.

Agnes was blessed with five beautiful grandchildren that she absolutely adored. When she was not gardening or embroidering you would find Agnes at her grandchildren’s sporting events, choir concerts and award ceremonies. She was each of their biggest fans. When Agnes would talk about her family she would beam with pride. They were the love of her life and apple of her eye. Alongside of her was her four-legged fur baby, Danny, whom she called Danny Boy. He always gave her endless love and kept her days full of joy after the passing of her beloved husband, Tom. Agnes will be greatly missed, but we have all gained a forever guardian angel.

Agnes is survived by her daughters, Kimberly Spiegel Allen (Wayne) and Nancy Carpico (Tony); and grandchildren, Alyssa, Breanna, Taylor, Seth, and Noah. She is also survived by her loving fur baby, Danny, along with several nieces and nephews.

Agnes was predeceased by her parents, David and Doris Paton; her husband, Thomas W. Spiegel and brother, David Paton.

Services will be held privately by the family.

Agnes’ family would like to thank Dr. Erin Juliano for the exceptional care and compassion she always gave to Agnes, especially going above and beyond with exemplary care in her last days with us.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Animal Protective Foundation.
