Alan R. Columbus, Sr., 75, passed away on May 1, 2024.
He was born on February 10, 1949, son of the late Christopher Columbus and Annie T. (Coons).
Alan served his country proud in many capacities, starting with volunteering to enter the Army where he was sent to Vietnam serving in the Plekiu Republic. Following his return, he continued to serve, and earned many awards including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with bronze service star, Army Achievement Medal, Overseas Training Ribbon, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and Device (1960). He would continue working in the military field, serving and contributing to many federal agencies, most recently at the U.S. Army Watervliet Arsenal as a Chief of Law Enforcement and Security before retiring in 2012.
Alan was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting, fishing, and camping with his wife Sue, and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Alan was a man of honor and courage. He believed in the Flag – a true patriot – and took every opportunity to support a fellow veteran whether navigating the process of getting the benefits they so deserved, or acknowledging their sacrifice.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 57 years, Suzanne; two children, Alan Jr. (Beth) and Roger (Heidi); brother, Ed (Wanda), and another sister and brother; as well as grandchildren, great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
