Latham – Albert "Al" Vant Zelfde, 84, died peacefully on Friday morning, August 12, after a long illness. Al was born on August 30, 1926 in Lockwood, NY a son of the late Frank and Bernadina Vant Zelfde. He was a graduate of Waverly High School and honorably served his country in the Navy during World War II. Al retired from Empie Manufacturing Company where he worked as a harness maker. Al enjoyed music and playing the saxophone for various bands. He enjoyed fishing and loved being at his camp on Schroon Lake. Al was a life member, treasurer and commissioner of the Verdoy Fire Department.
Al was predeceased by his brother, Arnold Vant Zelfde; sister, Florence Pickering; and his first wife, Irene Knapp.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 44 years, Lynne Vant Zelfde; devoted children, Donna Picard (Paul), Linda Federici (Bob), Karen Uttberg (Ed), Laurie Glynn (Tom Flint), Dina Farr (Frank Thiele) and Glenn Vant Zelfde (Wanda Torres); 15 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; sister, Josie Knapp; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday at 11 am at the New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. (rt. 155 south of Central Ave.).
