Albert Z. Gdula

November 8, 1922 — June 20, 2013

Albert Z. Gdula, a lifelong Albany resident, passed from this earth on June 20, 2013 after a brief illness at the Stratton VA Medical Center Hospice unit. He was surrounded by his loved ones through the time of his death.

Albert was the son of the late Veronica (nee Tribula) and Michael Gdula. He attended Albany schools and shortly after graduation was assigned to the 8th Air Force in England. Albert earned the rank of Captain and served as lead navigator in B-24 Aircraft squadrons, where he and his crew survived 31 bombing missions on Germany's war manufacturing facilities during WWII. He was awarded several medals for valor, including the Distinguished Flying Cross.

After Albert's honorable discharge from service, he returned to work for Shell Oil Company and retired after almost 40 years in Property Development and as the Senior Jobber Representative for most of the Northeast region of the country.

In retirement, Albert was a licensed Real Estate Broker, Notary Public, and belonged to the Albany County Board of Realtors. He specialized in property activities predominately around petroleum-based businesses

Albert enjoyed music and played the violin in high school. He also enjoyed playing tennis, especially with his sister, Mildred. He loved to follow tennis matches on television. Albert also enjoyed playing golf and was a past member of the Edison Club and current member of Pine Haven Country Club, where he served on several committees. He followed all major golf tournaments as well as many other sporting and current events on the television.

Albert had a number of interests and a wealth of lifelong friends- especially a 31 year friendship with Bill W. He was also a member of the VFW, Delmar American Legion and lifetime member of the Colonie Elks.

Albert was predeceased by his loving wife Doris (nee Brownell) of 61 years; younger brother Robert Gdula, and older sister Mildred Goetchus. He is survived by his children, Michael (Kathleen) Gdula and Carole Kieran; grandchildren Michelle, Kimberly, Michael Kenneth, William J. (Stephanie), Stephanie, and Sean (Joyelle); great-grandchildren Kayla, Kayleigh, Isabella, Mohana, Colin and Glynnton. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Memorial calling hours, service and entombment in Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery will be held at a later date for immediate family.
