ALBANY – Alfred B. Calka, 78, passed away peacefully at Albany Memorial Hospital on Monday, June 7, 2010. Born in Albany, he was the son of the late Casmir and Bernice Calka. Al lived in Albany for all of his life. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, serving in Germany on the Highway Patrol. Al also played football and was a member of the band while serving with the Army. He retired from the New York State Dept. of Education where he worked as a Security Services Assistant. Al enjoyed traveling and was an avid New York Yankees and New York Giants fan. He was the beloved husband of the late Josephine M. Spano Calka. Al is the devoted father of one daughter, Ann Calka Naylor (Mike) of Albany, whose husband Mike cared and looked after Al; and one son, Akiva (Joseph) Calka (Lori) of Albany. He is the cherished grandfather of Bridget, Max, Zoe and Thea. Al is the great-grandfather of Maya, who was the light of his life. He is the former husband and close friend of Gladys Bub, who also helped care for him during his illness. Also surviving are several loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. at New Comer-Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave). Calling hours will precede the service from 4:00 to 6:00 at the funeral home. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family in the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.
