Loudonville- Alfred J. Smith, 77, passed away on April 2, 2023 . Alfred was born on October 18, 1945 in Albany, New York to the late Alfred Smith and Bernice (Morawski) Seletyn.
Al graduated from Catholic Central High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy serving as a communications specialist. His years in the service brought him to Scotland and Alaska, making lifelong friends along the way. In 1968, Al married the love of his life, Carol, and they welcomed their only child, Kim, the following year. Upon his return to civilian life, Al was employed at Tri-State Electric Motors Inc., the family business. He went on to later work at Grand Eagle, Auburn Armature and Midway Industrial, where many customers turned into good friends. Al loved hunting, fishing, family vacations to Aruba, watching sports on television, and regular trips to the casino - otherwise known as "The Stone That Turns." Al knew someone everywhere he visited and if not, he made friends quickly. Undoubtedly his favorite activity, however, was serving as the biggest cheerleader for his grandchildren, Jacob and Emma, whether it was a baseball game or dance competition. My Pal Al absolutely relished his role as "Papa."
Alfred leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 55 years, Carol A. Smith, his daughter Kimberly LaChapelle (Marc), grandchildren Jacob and Emma LaChapelle and his fur grandchild, Tucker. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Al is predeceased by his sisters Marion Irwin and Elizabeth King.
