GUILDERLAND – Alger J. Girard, 86, of Guilderland, passed away on Saturday May 2, 2009 at the Inn of Community Hospice at St. Peter's Hospital.
He was born in Watervliet and was the son of the late Alger J. and Eugenie Lecron Girard. Alger graduated from Troy High School in 1940. He served in the United States Marine Corp 1st Marine Division as a Staff Sergeant Radio Technician from 1942 to 1945. His overseas assignment was in the Pacific Theatre operations and participated in the capture and occupation of Cape Glouster, New Britian and Peleliu Palau Group. Alger worked for New York Telephone Company as a switchman, Central Office Foreman and Central Office Specialist for 37 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Alger enjoyed gardening, cooking and trying new recipes. He was a communicant of Christ the King Church.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Madeline Rausch Girard; his sons, Robert (Sharon) Girard and Thomas Girard; his grandson, Brian (Terri) Girard; great granddaughters, Riley and Sydney Girard; his brother in law Joan (James) Eustace and many very special friends.
Funeral services will be Tuesday morning at 9:15 at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie then to Christ the King Church at 10:00 where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Calling hours will be Monday from 4 to 7 pm at the funeral home. The parish family of Christ the King Church will gather at 4:30 for a service of prayer and remembrance. All are welcome. Interment will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery.
