Albany – Alice Carter, 93, passed away peacefully Thursday February 28, 2008 at St. Peter's Hospital.
Alice, daughter to the late Milligan and Geneva Joyner Grant was born on July 8, 1914 in Reeseville, S.C. She was the oldest of three children. After her birth, the family moved to Jacksonville, FL, it is there that Alice was raised, educated and where she called home.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Annebelle Paulin and brother Theodore Grant.
As a young woman, while in New York City playing Basketball for a traveling team she met her future husband, James Carter, who was from this area. They were married on May 6, 1943 and settled in Colonie in 1953. They were blessed with a daughter, Roberta in 1949 and have been happy to call Colonie home since. James predeceased Alice in 1987.
Besides being a wonderful homemaker, Alice was always employed and was a faithful volunteer. She worked at Montgomery Wards in Menands for over twenty-five years and most recently worked at Old Navy until age 90. Alice also delivered Mobile Meals for St. Peter's Hospital for 17 years and volunteered at the Salvation Army for 15 years. She was a loyal and active member of the Pine Grove United Methodist Church for the past 50 years and was recently honored as a member for over 60 years of the M.C. Lawton Civic & Cultural Club, which is the oldest organization of its kind in the Nation. Alice enjoyed long the friendships she had developed over the years and was an avid bowler competing in a league as recently as a few months ago.
The family wishes to thank to the Doctors, Nurses and Staff of St. Peter's Hospital and the Hospice Inn for their loving care and attention to Alice during her short stay.
Alice is survived by her loving daughter Roberta Carter and her grandson James Carter II, who was Alice's pride and joy, godsons, Ernest (Carolyn) Eggleston and The Honorable Judge William (Joanne) Carter; Sister-in-law, Etta Leronia Bennett Grant; nieces, Sandra Eggleston, Dr. Brenda Harris, and Ruth Carter; nephew; William (Takako) Carter; cousins Lois and Robert Lewis, and a host of other great nieces, nephews and family members. Also mourning her passing are her Pine Grove family and special friends Charlie & Janet Matthews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the M.C. Lawton Scholarship Fund.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11:00am at the Pine Grove United Methodist Church, 1580 Central Ave., Colonie. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
