Alice Gray Artis, 80, of Albany, N.Y. passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at Teresian House Nursing Home. She was born in Warsaw, N.C. on August 20, 1931. Alice was the daughter of the late Johnnie Herring and Sendonia Mott and was raised in love by Sendonia and James Mott. She attended CW Dobbins High School in Wallace, N.C. through 11th grade and helped take care of her 12 siblings. Alice was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, 562 Clinton Ave, Albany, Pastor Herman Thomas Jr., for more than fifty years. She enjoyed the gospel whether it was the preached word or gospel music.
Alice was married to the late Ivory C. Artis for 33 years before his death in 1995. In addition to her parents and husband, Alice was predeceased by her son Ivory Artis, Jr., brothers, Willie Mott, Frank Mott, Walter Mott and sister Lacey Mott. Alice is survived by her sisters, Geraldine Thompson, Myrtle Battle (Jessie), Doris Herring (James), Rosia Mott, Hazel Ware (Jerry), Brenda Woods (Clayton), brothers Earl Mott (Joanne), and Ronnie Glen Mott (Jackie), seven children: son, Ronald Tillery (Joyce),daughters, Annette Smith(Ellis), Wanda Yarbor (James), Diana Bonner(Delroy), Beverly Artis, Sonya Artis and Toneka Owens (Eric); 19 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, two goddaughters, Barbara Williams and Tasha Mackey and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Funeral Services will be Friday, April 20th at 11:00 a.m. at the Metropolitan New Testament Missionary Baptist Church, 105 Second St., Albany. Calling hours will precede the service from 9:00 to 11:00 am at the church. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park, Colonie.
