ALBANY – Alice M. Kirtley, 98, passed away at her home on Friday January 6, 2023 surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Cohoes on November 14, 1924, the daughter of the late Ernest G. and Anna V. (Murphy) Benway. Alice attended Blessed Sacrament Elementary School and graduated from Vincentian High School.
She worked for many years in the Albany High School cafeteria, retiring at the age of 86.
Alice was a true "people person" who could strike up a conversation with anyone. She always had an open door for family and friends whether it was Sunday night dinner, poker, or pinochle. She was a fan of the Mets and the Giants and loved going to the casinos, but her greatest passion was her family, who she deeply loved and lived for.
Besides her parents, Alice was predeceased by her husband, Donald; her children, Susan Van Buren, Stephen Kirtley, David Kirtley and Cynthia Kirtley, and sister, Lois A. Watt.
Alice is survived by her children, Donna Marshall, Keith Kirtley, Lisa (Tom) Hart, Mike (Tracy) Kirtley, Cheryl (Mike) Popson, and Shelly (Mark) Mance; brother, John (Patty) Benway; daughter in law, Marchelle Kirtley; 21 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Dr. Gary Bakst, who was her favorite doctor, as well as Landmark, Community Hospice and the CVS Pharmacy staff at 1170 Western Avenue.
Visiting hours will be held from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm with a memorial service immediately following at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie.
