Colonie – Alice M. Newton passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on October 1, 2013. Two weeks shy of her 90th birthday. She was affectionately known as "Nanny Newt" not only to her own grandchildren and great-grandchildren but to every child who knew her.
Alice's undying devotion to family provided her with the strength and courage required to raise five children on her own after the sudden and premature death of her husband. She taught us the value of love of family, importance of dedication and hard work to achieve, and that forever "don't give up no matter what" attitude.
Nan loved the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays where the family would gather together. Above the chaos that surrounded her, she would sit in her chair and smile. She would look over her large family scattered about the rooms with love in her heart and then yell for someone to bring her a new cup of hot coffee and a piece of pie.
The widow of Arthur Newton Sr., who predeceased her on July 8th 1966, Alice leaves behind to celebrate her life, her children; Nancy, Mary (Tom), Art Jr., Barbara (Jack), and Carol ; her grandchildren Jacqueline (Joey), Tony, Todd (Kathy), Jami (Celeste), Nicole (Pete), Gary (Tammy), Crystal, Tara, Jessica and John ; great-grandchildren; Destiny, Kaylee, Kayla, Samantha, and Shealynn Rose. Alice is also survived by her sister Lucille Smith of Memphis, TN.
The family expresses their heartfelt appreciation for the years of compassionate care and devotion provided to Nan by her daughter Barb and her son-in-law Jack to whom we were forever saying, "What would we do without you guys?" The family would also like to extend their appreciation for the compassionate care provided to Nan in her last weeks of life at St. Peter's Hospice Inn. A special thanks to Corrin, Liz, Margaret, and Betsy who were not only compassionate, professional, and caring to our mom but also to the entire family. The family asks that anyone wishing to remember Nan make a contribution in her name to St. Jude's Children's Hospital 262 Danny Thomas Pl Memphis, TN 38105.
Funeral services for Nan will be Friday October 4th at 1 p.m. at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie. Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
