ALBANY - Allan Donald (Don) Emerich, 81, peacefully entered eternal rest on Saturday, June 13, 2015 following a brief illness. At his side were Jack McAvoy, his long-time companion and caregiver, and Mr. McAvoy's partner, Andrew J. Soldani, both of Albany. Don was predeceased by his dear friend, Harry G. Schalck of West Chester, Pennsylvania
Don was born September 22, 1933 to Harry Emerich and Georgia (Haughey) Emerich in East Lansing, Michigan. He was a graduate of Columbia College and Michigan State University with a degree in journalism. He served in the Michigan National Guard. He moved to New York in 1967 and at the time of his retirement, had attained the title of Chief Technical Editor of the Department of Transportation of New York State, with numerous journals and reports to his credit.
A Shaker scholar, Don was instrumental in organizing the Smithsonian Institution's exhibit and catalog "SHAKER: The Collection of Edward Deming Andrews and Faith Andrews," in 1974, at the Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C.
A life-long architectural enthusiast, Don helped found the local Turpin-Bannister chapter of the national Society of Architectural Historians, an organization that advocates for historic preservation and education. He served on the national board of the parent organization. Don organized lectures for the local chapter, procuring nationally recognized authors and critics on architecture and historic preservation, and his architectural tours were eagerly anticipated and quickly sold-out.
Don was an avid reader, writer, and lecturer on Shaker architectural history. He enjoyed spending time with friends in Castine, Maine each summer.
Our sincere gratitude to the Palliative Care Team of the Eddy Visiting Nurses and Doctors, in particular, Good Tom and Dr. Kevin Dooley; their care and compassion was exemplary,
Service is private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Don's memory to The Shaker Museum-Mount Lebanon, 202 Shaker Road, New Lebanon, NY 12125.
