Desmarais, Alyre J.
Albany – Alyre J. Desmarais, 81, passed away Tuesday September 15, 2009 at Albany Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Cohoes the son of the late Alyre P. and Yvonne (Soulier) Desmarais and was a lifelong area resident. Alyre was a veteran of the US Navy during WW II and a machinist at the Watervliet Arsenal for 35 years retiring in 1983. After retirement, he then drove for Hertz Rental Car. Alyre was a part of what Tom Brokaw referred to as America's Greatest Generation, his greatest passions being his family and work. He was also an avid NY Yankee fan, something he passed on to his son and grandson.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years Doris (Hourigan) Desmarais; their loving children, Stephen (Joann) Desmarais and Mary (Jim) Ellis; his daughter-in-law, Chris Desmarais Rushford; grandchildren, Corrina, Tyler, Jessica, Travis, Karey and Kyle; great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Emma, Carson and Ava and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Jerry Desmarais, and his sisters, Lorraine Dupont, Lucille Delong and Lillian Legace.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 9:15am from New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155 south of Central Ave.) then to St. Anthony of Padua Shrine Church, Troy where a Mass of Christina Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am. Calling hours will be Thursday 4:00 to 7:00pm at the funeral home. Interment will be in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna.
