ALBANY – Andrew T. Viglucci died Saturday from complications of Alzheimers. He was 84.
His long career as a newspaperman included a brief stint in 1967 as managing editor of the Times Union, a position he left to become the editor of the San Juan Star, a Pulitzer Prize winning English daily in Puerto Rico. Mr. Viglucci and his longtime friend William Kennedy had been among the founding staff of the San Juan paper. He edited the Star for 35 years and then returned to his native Albany.
The second child of Carmine and Helen Fitzgerald Viglucci, Andrew graduated from Albany High, served in the Navy during World War II and went on to get a degree from Clark University on the GI bill. He then embarked on his lifetime career in journalism.
Mr. Viglucci is survived by his widow Betsy Lopez Abrams; his children Andres (Linda Robertson), Maria Elena (Victor Abraham), Maria Angela (Ed Murphy), Maria Cristina and Cara Rafaela; his grand children Victor Paul and Diego Abraham, Nicolas, Natalie and Sofia Viglucci; his brother Carmen (Pat Costa) and cousins, nephews and nieces to numerous to mention. He was predeceased by his brother Michael and sister Helen.
Mr. Viglucci's remains will be cremated. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Memorial Services on Monday evening at 6:00 at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the charity of one's choice.
