Troy- Anna Mae Canty, 76, passed away on Friday, November 15, 2019 at Samaritan Hospital, surrounded by her children and loved ones after a courageous battle with Dementia.
Born January 1, 1943, the daughter of the late Bennie Canty Sr. and Annie Mae Green-Canty, Anna Mae was born and raised in Greeleyville, SC. In her teens she moved to Baltimore, MD and later came to Troy, NY. She worked at Van Rensselaer Manor for a short period of time and then went to Fenimore Trace working in Housekeeping.
Anna Mae more affectionately known to most as "Anto" was also known for her down-home cooking, especially her "perlo rice" and homemade pound cakes. Anto was known for some special hobbies such as ceramics and hair dressing. She was a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church, Troy NY, where she served on the senior choir for many years.
Anne Mae is survived by her children Marsha (Leonard) Banks, Deborah (Alonzo Sr.) Alexander, of Troy NY, Jerome Canty, of Palm Beach, FL. She is also survived by her grandchildren Sharona, Shaquana, Leonard Jr., Darrien, Shataiya, Jamiesha, Alonzo Jr., Thyrone, An'yee, Tyshawn, Jarrodd, Melissa and Justin, 14 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild. Anna also leaves to cherish her memory, her brother Bennie (Julia) Canty Jr., her (adopted son) Wesley Reed and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Anne Mae was predeceased by her five sisters, Dorothy Keels, Ruby Footman, Mary Canty, Thelma Rodgers, and Betty Pompey.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at Oak Grove Baptist Church, 514 Seventh Ave, Troy, NY 12180 from 9am-11am. A home going celebration will begin at 11am at the church with interment following at Graceland Cemetery.
