Colonie- Anne Bernice "Bernie" Bytner peacefully entered into heaven on April 29 at the age of 87. Born in Troy, she was the daughter of the late James Sullivan and Josephine Walsh. She graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1946 and St. Peter's School of Nursing in 1949. She became an operating room nurse at St. Peter's Hospital.
Having chosen to be a full time wife and homemaker, she immersed herself in this role and loved being a "Kool-Aid" Mom in the neighborhood. Their home was the location of many summertime steak and clambake parties that have left us all with many fond memories. As her children grew up, she returned to the nursing profession and transitioned from a part time school nurse to the District Nurse in the South Colonie School District. Upon her retirement, she and her husband spent winters in Florida, traveled throughout the U.S. and enjoyed spending time with family.
Bernie's smile and sweet disposition will be greatly missed. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Robert; seven children: Kerry, Joanne (David) Newman, Karen (Chick) Weir, Bonnie (Mark Malewicz), Kevin (Joan Flanigan), Richard (Stacy) and James; ten grandsons and one great-grandson. She was predeceased by her sister, Marjorie Connolly and her brother, Salvatorian Brother- Paul Sullivan.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Sharon Tietgens for her care, guidance and support and also to Lystra Stopera, CNA for her loving and compassionate care during Bernie's illness. Their selfless devotion allowed her to spend her final days at home, per her wishes.
Calling hours will be held from 4-7 pm on Monday, May 2 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 343 Karner Road, Colonie.
