COLONIE - ANNE MARIE AFFOURTIT HOUSE SALOV – HEERAN passed into the arms of the Lord on August 30, 2008, with her family by her side.
Anne was born on April 2nd, the youngest girl of twelve children. Her parents were Peter L. and Anne M. (Gunther) Affourtit. She, like her seven brothers and her sisters, attended St. Bernard's Labare Elementary School and Richmond Hill High School. Anne was accepted by New York's Pratt Institute, but did not attend. She later took night business classes at Troy High School.
She was predeceased by her father in 1955, her mother in 1961 and her youngest daughter, Debbie Anne Salov Phlipsak Kellam, in 1998. Anne was predeceased by her three husbands, Vrooman Millard House, George Salov, Jr., in 1963, and Thomas J. Heeran in 1991. Her four sisters, Catherine Loughlin, Mary Duseck, Alice Uhre and Mary Jane Affourtit and six of her brothers, George F., William J., James H., Charles L., Peter L., and Daniel J. Affourtit predeceased her.
Anne moved to the Capitol District in 1940, after her marriage to Mr. House. Before they parted ways, they had a son, Robert E. House.
In 1949, she married her true love, George Salov, Jr., a WWII Staff Sergeant and skilled welder. With George, she had two daughters, Cheryl Lynn Salov Vadney and Debbie. George died much too young.
She is survived by two children, Robert E. House, Allentown, PA and Cheryl L. Vadney, Palm Bay FL; two grandchildren, William A. Phlipsak and Sean H. Vadney; a brother, Walter J. Affourtit, N. Babylon, NY; three great grandchildren, Pearl McClure, Jacob E. and Sean George (her Georgie-boy) Vadney; and her aunt, Ellen Hick Gunther, E. Rockaway, NY.
Anne enjoyed her flower and vegetable garden, and loved to cook and bake, as well as sewing (making a lot of clothing for herself and her children.). She was a Girl Scout Leader for a troop which met at Forts Ferry School, and, also, taught swimming and diving evenings for the Red Cross at Shaker High School. Anne also volunteered at the Albany County Nursing Home and the V.A. Hospital in Albany.
Her children were most important to her, but she would never turn down anyone who needed help. She often shared items she had cooked and baked with her neighbors.
Anne started working during WWII, first as a clerk for Roxy Cleaners and later, Commodore Cleaners. Next, she worked for New York State Veterans Bonus, File and Unemployment. She also was a telephone operator for New York State Senate Chambers and various local area hospitals. She was the operator on duty at Hellman's Hotel and Movie House in 1964 when the facility was destroyed by fire. She stayed at the switchboard until she had notified all of the employees and all of the guests staying at the hotel were safely out. Anne and the Fire Captain saved the business files. A photo of her wet and covered in fireman's foam made the front page of the Times Union, which cited her as a heroine. She also worked for Cartwright Sales and Service in North Troy as a payroll clerk, before being promoted to Credit Manager. For a time, she was the Credit Manager at the Latham Boston Store.
Anne loved her children and grandchildren; she babysat for both grandchildren during their first two years. She was a Life Member of VFW Post 729 Auxiliary (Watervliet) and a member of the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary, Colonie-Latham. At one time, she belonged to the Watervliet Elks, but later became a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, Colonie Lodge of Elks, where she often volunteered.
