ALBANY – Anne Palmer Wilkes, 84, passed away on Tuesday, July 24, 2007. She was born in Clinton, Iowa on February 22, 1923 and was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary McConnell. Anne was an art major and graduated from the University of Chicago. She was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II with the WAVES as a Specialist, 2nd Class. Mrs. Wilkes worked for the Albany County Medical Society from where she retired. She was a member of the Albany Artists Group for many years and was in the Who's Who of American Artists. Anne held the title of Miss Subway in 1944. She was an accomplished swimmer and was the former Illinois backstroke record holder. Mrs. Wilkes was a pet lover and especially loved cats. Anne was the beloved wife of the late George R. Wilkes, Sr. She is the devoted mother of George R. Wilkes, Jr. and his wife, Cheryl of Guilderland, Christopher J. Wilkes and his wife, Kathleen of Guilderland and Barton C. Wilkes and his wife, Elizabeth of Spiegeltown. Anne is the sister of Richard, Malcolm and Donald McConnell and the late Bart, Robert and Ansley McConnell. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Saturday morning at 9:00 at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave). Calling hours will be Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Albany Rural Cemetery, Menands. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Whiskers Animal Benevolent League, P.O. Box 11190, Albany, NY 12211 in memory of Anne P. Wilkes.
