ROTTERDAM-Anthony "Tony" Kutny, 97 of Rotterdam, NY passed away on Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Glendale Nursing Home. Tony was born in Manhattan, NY the son of the late John and Marie (Jarusz) Kutny. Tony was a WWII Veteran having served in the US Army Air Corp. After completing basic training, Tony married the love of his life Katherine Dowback on August 17, 1943 in NYC. He then returned to duty to travel overseas to Cairo, Egypt, N. Africa, Ukraine and then England. He refueled B 17's, worked on the crash crew and provided escorts during his service to his country. After returning from the service, Tony and his wife Katherine lived in the two-family home that his father bought in Schenectady, until 1959, when they moved to Rotterdam. Tony worked at General Electric as a welder and retired in 1980 after 40 years of service.
Tony was a member of the St. Gabriel's Church in Rotterdam and a former member of the VFW in Rotterdam. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, traveling and being outdoors. Tony was a member and attended picnics with the GE Quarter Century Club at the Altamont Fairgrounds.
Tony is survived by his children Janet Kutny and Richard Kutny (Elsie); by his 5 grandchildren Michael Kutny (Marie), Anna Jones, Eric Kutny (Kathryn), Steven Kutny (Jennifer) and Amber Sleichter (Aaron); and great grandchildren Emma Kutny, Samantha Kutny, Kara Kutny, and Lea Kutny. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Tony was predeceased by his wife Katherine (Dowback) Kutny in 2001 after 58 years of marriage. He is also predeceased by his sister Olga Conklin.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Rehabilitation Unit and the Erie Crossings floor at Glendale Nursing Home for the care and support that Tony received and to Hospice for their assistance and support.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 PM on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at St. Gabriel's Church, 3040 Hamburg St. Schenectady.
Entombment will take place at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna with military honors.
Contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union St. Schenectady, NY 12308 in memory of Tony.
