CLIFTON PARK - Aspasia "Bessie" Papadatos Sandalakis, 91, passed away from natural causes on June 8, 2020.
Born on the Island of Cephalonia, Greece, on December 10, 1928, Bessie was the daughter of the late Gerasimos and Caliope (nee: Gerasimatos) Papadatos. In addition to her parents, Bessie was predeceased by her husband, Andrew M. Sandalakis.
Bessie grew up in the small village of Peratata amongst a large loving family. She immigrated to the United States in 1947 with her immediate family after World War II to escape the Greek Civil War. It didn't take her long before she learned to enjoy the advantages of life in the large city of New York. On October 20, 1957, she married Andrew Sandalakis, also from Greece. Together they owned and operated various small businesses in Syracuse, Queensbury and then Saratoga Springs, New York.
For more than 40 years, Bessie was a proud member of St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church in Albany. She loved her fellow parishioners and always enjoyed volunteering at the church festivals. Bessie loved participating and watching the Greek folk dances especially when the youngsters performed.
Nothing brought more joy to Bessie than from her family whom she loved immensely. She is survived by her children, Manousos "Manny" Sandalakis of Clifton Park, Regina (James) Leach of Clifton Park and Theodore Sandalakis of Charlotte, North Carolina; 3 grandchildren, Andrew Leach of San Francisco, CA (Surabhi), John Leach of Somerville, MA and, and Eric Leach of Charlotte, NC.
The Sandalakis family would like to acknowledge and thank the wonderful caregivers at Schuyler Ridge Nursing Home and the Hospice professionals for their expert caregiving and constant love and support.
Because of the current Covid-19 pandemic, a private funeral service will be held at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church. Interment, Graceland Cemetery, Albany, NY
Memorial contributions may be made in Bessie's memory to St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, 440 Whitehall Rd., Albany, NY 12208.
