Saratoga Springs, NY – Assaad S. Daoud, M.D., 87, who died Tuesday, January 4t, 2011, led a Veterans Administration Hospital team which performed ground breaking research in the field of atherosclerosis. His life was marked by a felicitous combination of intelligence, enterprise, humor and steadfastness. He was born in Zebdani, Syria to Salim and Wardeh Daoud. A precocious child, he was the first from his village to receive an education beyond elementary school. At age 12, he won a scholarship to study in Damascus with the top students throughout the country. He went on to study medicine at the Syrian University and earned his Doctorate from the University of Paris, Sorbonne, in Paris France. He came to the United States in 1951 as an intern, and then a resident of Springfield Hospital. He joined the staff of the Albany Medical College in 1956 as Assistant Professor of Pathology, where he taught until his retirement in 1986 as Professor Emeritus. He began his career with the Veterans Administration in 1961 as the Chief of Laboratory Services and retired in 1997 as the Assistant Chief of Staff for the VA Hospital. As a heart disease researcher, he was the lead or co-author of over 120 research papers. He served on several national VA and American Heart Association boards over a twenty year period. He was proud of his long continuous record of N.I.H. research funding. Dr. Daoud is survived by his wife of fifty three years, Jeanette Mary Daoud. Together they shared a passion for travel, and found their greatest fulfillment in the role of parents. He is also survived by his daughter, Rosemary Walsh and his sons, Sam and Charlie; his sisters, Rahmeh, Salimeh and Mariam and eight grandchildren.
