SCHENECTADY-Mr. August "Augie" "Pop" Mackiewicz died peacefully at home on June 24, 2018 at the age of 95, five days shy of 96.
Born on June 29, 1922 in New York, NY to Andrew and Anna Mackiewicz, he grew up in a Polish household with four siblings. Augie was the first in his family to graduate from college. He remained in the city for most of his adult life, and enjoyed working in the advertising department at the Macy's in Herald Square for 42 years.
Augie proudly served his country during World War II as a member of the United States Army. He served in the 2nd Armored Division, 100th Division, and 397th Infantry Regiment. He was a Desert Training Air Cadet. In 2014, Augie took part in the Patriot Flight to Washington D.C. to be honored for his service and this became one of his favorite memories.
Augie is survived by and will be dearly missed by his wife of 69 years, Peggy Mackiewicz; daughters and sons-in-law, Vicki Hanly (Michael) and Joan Qualtere (Thomas); grandchildren, Christopher Hanly (Christy), Karen Lehmbeck (Richard), Jennifer Genoa (Matthew), Thomas Qualtere, Maria Qualtere (fiancé Luc Rogers), and Jonathan Qualtere, and five great-grandchildren.
Augie adored spending time with his family, and they are comforted by the many wonderful memories they shared with him over the years. Whether standing at the edge of ocean waves whistling for his children & grandchildren to swim closer to shore, or calling on the phone just to check in, he always exhibited his caring, kind, and patient demeanor. He and his wife ("Nani" and "Pop"), are the best example of how opposites attract, and family and friends loved watching their love story unfold.
Augie will also be remembered for singing his beloved Rat Pack tunes, and penchant for a cold Coors Light. In the final days of his life, Augie was comforted by the words of Sinatra, "I've lived a life that's full, I've traveled each and every highway, But more, much more than this, I did it my way."
