Avery E. Spofford

ROTTERDAM – Avery E. Spofford, 77, of Rotterdam, passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2006 at St. Clare's Hospital, after an extended illness. Known to his family and friends as "Turk", he was born in Hillsboro, NH on January 28, 1929 to the late Roy and Helena Quackenbush Spofford. He was educated in Bennington, VT and retired from Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation in Colonie as the union's Chief Grievance Manager and Treasurer. He was also a life member of the Elks Club. Turk is survived by his loving and caring wife of 58 years, Joan Kelley Spofford; his daughters, Colleen (Tom) Malloy of Schenectady, Kelley (David) Brockmann of Ballston, Mary (Gary) Flynn of Holyoke, MA and his sons, Timothy (Barbara) Spofford of St. Petersburg, FL, Christopher (Nancy) Spofford of Eagle Bridge and Scott Spofford of Schenectady. He was predeceased by his son James (Holly) Spofford. Turk also leaves behind his grandchildren; Kenneth Maloney, Megan Robert, Rory Robert, Zachary Malloy, Leigh, Erin and Christopher Spofford, Sean, Nancy and Kennedy Spofford, David, Kristen, Tanner and Erika Brockmann, Brian and Jaime Beloncik and Kelley Flynn, four great-grandchildren, his sister, Beatrice Lancto of Williamstown, MA and his brother, James (Merriom) Spofford of East Dorset, VT.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave). Calling hours will precede the service from 11:00 to 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow the service in Memory's Garden. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union St., Schenectady, NY 12308 in memory of Avery E. Spofford. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the many nurses and staff of St. Clare's Hospital and Community Hospice of Schenectady for the excellent care and compassion given to Turk during his illness.
