Avis Joan Hughes-Phillippe, 85, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2023 at home, surrounded by family.
Avis was born in Albany to the late George and Winifred Harbinger. She worked as a Secretary for SUNY Central Administration in Albany, New York. Even though she was retired 20+ years she still loved getting together with her friends from work for lunch.
Avis was outgoing. She delighted in travelling near and far. A week on the Jersey shore, a bus trip across the US, or a cruise through the Mediterranean, she was always ready to go. She often travelled with the Prime Timers and Lisha Kill Senior Groups, where she held various offices over the years. Crocheting blankets for her family, friends and for craft fundraisers took up many of her quiet hours. Above all, being around people she adored brought her great joy. If you are reading this you are one of those people.
Avis was predeceased by her first husband James P. Hughes, son, James G. Hughes, and sister, Ruth Barbuto.
Avis is survived by her loving husband John Phillippe; her children, Deborah Leonhardt, David (Linda) Hughes, William (June) Hughes; her sister Judy Eaton; and sister-in-law Diane Hughes. She was the proud Nana of Valerie Portanova, Heather King, Jay Hughes, Dennis (Rebecca) Hughes, Chelsea (Chris) Donevski, Elaina Hughes, Lydia Hughes and great-grandmother Aiden Correa, Caleb Hughes, and Logan Hughes.
Memorial Visitation will be held Saturday, July 29, 2023, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Calvary United Methodist Church, 15 Ridge Pl, Latham, NY 12110. Memorial service will follow at 11:00 am at the Church. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers the family requests with gratitude that memorial donations be made to either The Community Hospice, 310 S. Manning Blvd, Albany, NY 12208, or Capital City Rescue Mission, PO Box 1999, Albany, NY 12201.
