ALBANY Avis Maude Walters (nee Duncan) passed on from this world on Saturday, September 17, 2016. Avis was born in the parish of Clarendon, Jamaica WI. She was preceded in death by her husband, Egbert McKenley Walters, her father, James Duncan and mother, Anita Duncan. She was also preceded by six brothers and three sisters.
Young Avis was educated at the Kellits School in Chapelton, Jamaica. She took an interest in fashion at an early age and studied dressmaking as well as design. Not to be outdone, Avis's love of fashion and beauty led to her study of cosmetology.
Avis then met and married the love of her life, Egbert McKenley Walters. Channeling their entrepreneurial spirit, Egbert and Avis owned and operated a small grocery store. In 1968, the Walters Family headed to the United States. Soon after, Avis worked for many years at the VA Hospital as a Dietary Technician. Beautiful inside and out, strong and a fighter in every sense of the word; she will always remain our S-HERO.
Avis is survived by her nine children: Genevieve, Pam, Michael (Gail), Paul, Molly (Jesse), Yvonne, Patrick (Lisa), Evelyn and Paulette (Barrington). Two sisters, Inez and Daphne; 19 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and many friends. She may be gone but will never be forgotten.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Saturday, September 24, 2016, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. (Viewing) and 11:30 to 1:00 p.m. (Homecoming Service) at the New Comer Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie, NY. Interment will take place next to her beloved husband, Egbert, in Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont, NY.
