Barbara Bianchi

September 2, 1932 — February 6, 2016

Schenectady, NY - Barbara R. Bianchi, 83, passed away on Saturday February 6, 2016 at St. Johnsville Nursing Center after a short battle with cancer.

She was born on September 22, 1932 to the late Pawel (Paul) and Michalina (Rubczak) Lukawski in Kalusz, Poland.

Barbara worked as a CNA for 28 years at Kingsway Arms Nursing Home in Schenectady. She loved taking care of the elderly and was always an understanding and helpful friend to those in need. She was also a full time mom, homemaker, avid gardener and cat lover throughout her life.

Barbara is survived by her husband James R. Bianchi, her son David R. Bianchi, granddaughters Julie A. Bianchi, Gina M. Parker and husband Caleb, great granddaughter Hannah D. Parker, brother Tadeusz (Ted) Lukawski and wife Lori along with their two sons and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Barbara was preceded in death by her eldest son Christopher J. Bianchi in March 2010.

Barbara, her brother Ted and mother Michalina became world travelers at an early age under very unusual circumstances. At seven years old Barbara and family were forced by Russian soldiers from their homes in Poland and sent by train to Siberia for refuge from the impending war and German invasion. After two years they left Siberia travelling south through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan eventually sailing the Caspian Sea to Tehran.

Travels then took them through Karachi to Bombay. They later sailed the Indian Ocean to Mombassa and then on to Kampala in Uganda where they resided four years in a camp on the shores of Lake Victoria. They attended schools there and Barbara learned to play the violin. In 1948 they traveled back through Mombassa, sailed the Red Sea, the Mediterranean and Atlantic to reach England where they were reunited with their father who was in the armed forces stationed in Scotland. Shortly afterwards she turned 16 years old and started working at companies such as Pye Ltd and Chivers Ltd. Barbara often took her younger brother Ted on trips to the seaside in Brighton and to London to meet their father, go shopping and sightseeing.

It was in England where she met an American serviceman from the Air Force, would fall in love and get married in 1956 and then sail the Atlantic once again and settle down to raise her family in Schenectady, NY. Her brother with his wife, children and mother would soon follow to the US and settle down in Reading, Pa.
