Barbara W. Johnson

Barbara Alene Wheeler Johnson, 97, passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at The Eddy Village Green in Cohoes.Barbara was born in Cobleskill, NY, the daughter of the late Ray Leech Wheeler and Helen Vernette Chapin. She attended Cobleskill High School and then graduated from Elmira College where she received her BA in education, and SUNY Albany where she got her MA in Library Science.

Barbara was predeceased by her beloved husband of 57 years, Robert Graham Johnson. 

She was also predeceased by her son, Stephen Wheeler Johnson and brother, Richard Wheeler. 

She is survived by her daughter, Ruth Ellen Johnson James of Holland, MI; five grandchildren, Daniel (Jennifer), Derek, Peter (Alexandra Bentzen) and Michael (Stacia Lee) James, Kristin Johnson Scaggs (Charlie); nine great-grandchildren; and two nieces, Marsha Wheeler Marcucian and Christine Wheeler Richardson.

 Barbara was a woman of tremendous faith and devotion to Christ. She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albany, NY where she is remembered as a “spiritual mother” to many. Throughout her life Barbara turned to scripture to guide her in recognizing and celebrating the many joys in her life and to seek strength and solace in challenging times. She offered up prayer for family, friends and strangers with ease and to the very end, praised the Lord for life’s blessings.

 A memorial service to honor and remember Barbara’s life will be held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 63 Mountain View Ave., Albany on December 7, 2024 at 1030am
