Barbara Gregory Oswald

Barbara G. Oswald, 68, of Halfmoon died peacefully at home with her family, while overlooking her gardens on Thursday, July 5, 2012. Barbara was born February 18, 1944 in Deventer, the Netherlands, to José and Alexander Gregory.

She arrived in Albany in 1969, married Bradford R. Oswald in 1974, and became a US citizen in 2007. She is survived by her husband, children Wendelien and Willem, her mother, sisters Justine and Pauline, and brother Alexander.

Barbara was well known for many floral displays at the annual New York in Bloom; collecting wildflowers for striking arrangements; ice skating parties on the Mohawk River; real candles lit on her Christmas tree; Sinterklaas parties for 55 people; mastering the convection microwave; "making something from nothing;" her powerful tennis serve, and volunteering for PTA, dance class costumes, Cub Scouts, 4H, and leading many garden club workshops.

Barbara is best known for many loyal and long friendships and her nourishing family life. She loved her flowers and gardening, entertaining, cooking/baking, tennis, sailing, skating/skiing, classical music, ballet; and was a skilled craftsperson in knitting, cross stitching, and sewing. She traveled widely and returned nearly every year to see her Dutch family.

She was an active member of the Strings tennis group and Book club, Garden Explorers, Gardeners Workshop, The Antique Club, The Sitzmarkers, The International Club, The Society of Architectural Historians, Saratoga PLAN, and Dutch organization Jonge Vrouwen Gilde.

Barbara was an Occupational Therapist and came to Albany Medical College in 1969 on an exchange program. She then worked for NYS Capital District Psychiatric Center in a day program with out-patients on Holland Avenue, and later in a Half-Way House as assistant manager till 1976, retiring to start her family.

She leaves us with the everlasting memory of her warm smile and gorgeous blue eyes.

A memorial service will be held in the Gardner Earl Memorial Chapel, Oakwood Cemetery, Troy on Thursday, July 12, 2012 at 10 am. She requested many flowers for her service and donations in her memory for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 450 Brookline Ave., Boston, MA 02215; and Saratoga PLAN, 112 Spring St. Room 202, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.
