WESTMERE- Beatrice Ann Phelan, 91, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away on November 3, 2010 at St. Peter's Hospital after a short illness. Born in Albany, she was the daughter of the late James and Frances (Kirchner) Hurley, and sister of the late Frances Hurley and Kathleen Bojczuk.
Beatrice was a graduate of Albany High School and Mildred Elley Secretarial School. A retired employee of New York State she worked for the Office of the State Comptroller and the State Insurance Fund. She was also employed by the County Officer's Association.
Beatrice was the widow of the late John Thomas Phelan, Sr. who died in 1970. They married in 1946. She was the dedicated and loving mother of John Thomas, Jr. (Gail), James Leonard, Mary Frances (Frederick) and Robert Joseph (Mei Mei) and loving grandmother of John Thomas, III and Elizabeth Danish. Additionally she is survived by her sister Helen Scanlan and several nieces and nephews.
A widow for many years, Beatrice will be remembered for her loving devotion to all her family as well as her common sense and her constant support and inspiration to her children and grandchildren. All her life, she was dedicated to her faith and especially to the Blessed Virgin Mary. She was an active parishioner of Christ the King Parish in Westmere for many decades.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday morning at 10:00 at Christ the King Church, Westmere. There will be no calling hours. Interment will be in Our Lady Help of Christians Cemetery, Glenmont. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Church Building Fund, 20 Sumpter Ave., Albany, NY 12203 in memory of Beatrice A. Phelan.
