COLONIE – Bernard "Bernie" Pinkans, 69, went home to the Lord on Monday, February 12, 2007, where his grandmother, Julia and loving relatives and friends were waiting for him. Bernie passed away at St. Peter's Hospital where he was surrounded by his loving family.
Bernie was born on September 17, 1937 in Rezekne, Latvia and was the son of the late Dr. Josef Pynkan and Dr. Janina H. Kazrics Pinkans. He came to the United States as a young boy on February 20, 1950 and six years later he became a naturalized citizen. He was a veteran of the US Army where he proudly served as a medic. He retired in 1994 as a senior engineering technician for water resources for the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation in Albany, where he worked for over 35 years.
Bernie was a member of the Latvian American Association, the Colonie Elks Lodge #2192, Men's Auxiliary of the VFW Post #8692, and a social member of the Midway Fire Department, where the first 15 years he was actively involved on the ambulance squad. He enjoyed gourmet cooking, gardening, spending time at his summer camp on Galway Lake and loved to travel throughout both the United States and Europe. Most of all, Bernie loved to spend time with his family.
Bernie is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 44 years, Mary Anne Roman Pinkans; his devoted sons, whom he loved dearly, Michael S. (Kelly) Pinkans of Barre, VT and Joseph B. (Kerri) Pinkans of Colonie; his cherished granddaughters, Jennifer, Jessica, Kylie, and Kaitlyn; his sister, Aldonna Hart of Troy; his brother, John (Pat) Pinkans of Colonie and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his half sister, Alina Pynkan.
Funeral services will be Friday 8:45 a.m. at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave.) then to Our Lady of Mercy Church, 26 Wilson Ave., Colonie, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Memory's Garden, Colonie. Calling hours will be on Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
