Bernard J. Smith (Bernie), 89, of Colonie, passed away at Albany Medical Center on May 16, 2021 after a battle with heart and vascular disease. He was lovingly transitioned to the next life with his children at his side.
Bernie was a graduate of Vincentian Institute in Albany and he served in the U.S. Army as a corporal in the Korean War where he received a Purple Heart. He worked at the International Harvester in Menands, where he first met Carol, his loving wife of over 40 years, until its closing, before going on to work at the U.S. Post Office in Albany until retirement.
Bernie loved horseracing, casinos, Cleveland Indians baseball, Cleveland browns football, but most importantly, events with his children and grandchildren involved.
In addition to his parents John V. and Olive E. Smith, he was predeceased by his wife Carol.
Bernie is survived by his children Denise Pendt, Wayne B., Kevin M, (Wanda), and Victor L. (Nammi), 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 1 more due next month.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday May 19th from 4pm-7pm, with a service to follow Thursday May 20th at 10am at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Rd, Colonie NY 12205
Interment at St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands following the service Thursday.
