Bernard Paul Thomas, Sr., aka "Big Bernie" was born in Albany New York on June 7, 1954, to Milton and Bernice Thomas. He lived in the capital district for most of his life; residing in Albany until the family moved to Schenectady during his teen years and subsequently returned to Albany as an adult. As a youth, Bernie excelled in sports, particularly in baseball and basketball. He was also a gifted artist, proficient in drawing and working with watercolors. He created numerous canvases that he gift to family and friends.
He served his county as a Marine in Okinawa, Japan
He was a valued employee with Albany Management company for 25 years. You could often find him hanging outside of his workplace on Broadway hatting with people. Anyone that knew him would describe him as a nice guy. His greatest joy was his family, he would speak of them often and when he did his face lit up. Big Bernie could be quiet and withdrawn at times but you could not have had a better friend.
We have lost a true soldier and God has gained an angel.
Big Bernie is survived by his three sons; Bernard (Jessica)Thomas Jr., Nodell Thomas and Devin Thomas; sister Lillian Thomas-Smith; two aunts; Christine Parsons and Audrey Owens; one uncle, Richard Parsons, his longtime companion Lorraine Mckenzie. Big Bernie also leaves behind 17 grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Milton and Bernice Thomas; two sisters, Renee Bowen (Jap) and Althea Thomas (Sergio) and one brother, Milton Thomas Jr. (T)., Well done thy good and faithful servant. It is time to take your rest!!
