GLENMONT - Brian Caldwell, 71, passed away suddenly on April 17, 2023.
Brian was born in Troy to John Leonard Caldwell and Elizabeth "Betty" Harrat. He was raised in Latham and attended Shaker High School. He earned a B.S. in Organizational Behavior from Boston College and an M.S. in Counseling from the University of Albany.
He worked for two years at the SUNY Albany Continuing Education Project developing and conducting training for Department of Social Service Adult Protective Services staff statewide. He spent the next 37 years with the State as a training professional for the Office of Mental Health, the Division for Youth, the Office of Children and Family Services, and the Department of Health, where he retired in 2016 as Director of Training.
Brian also developed and conducted training nationally for the Juvenile Justice Trainers Association, where he served on the Board of Directors, and as a consultant for the U.S. Department of Justice, National Institute of Corrections.
He loved sports and the outdoors. In school he played on the football, volleyball and track teams, and was also active in golf, softball, hockey, hiking, camping, sailing, canoeing, and skiing. Brian also thoroughly enjoyed managing, coaching, and serving on the Board of Directors for the Bethlehem Tomboys Girls Softball League.
In their retirement, Brian and his sweetheart, Karen Langell, traveled extensively domestically and internationally and indulged their interest in American history by reading, taking courses, and visiting historical sites. He also enjoyed cooking, gardening, and bird watching and he toiled in a fruitless, but enjoyable crusade to improve his golf game.
In addition to Karen, he is survived by his beloved daughters, Lindsey S. Caldwell of Iowa City, Iowa, and Haley S. Caldwell of Chapel Hill, N.C.; his brother, Mark L. Caldwell of Manhattan and Red Hook; and his beloved grandchildren, Calvin and Autumn Ward, who he did his very best to spoil.
There will be no visitation or services. His ashes will be interred in the family burial plot at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Troy.
