East Greenbush -
Gent, Brian T., 71, a resident of East Greenbush, died on August 18 of complications from a long illness. He attended St Elizabeth's Elementary School in Wyckoff, NJ, Ramapo HS in Franklin Lakes, NJ, and St Joseph's College in Indiana.
An adventurous outdoorsman, Brian was a longtime member of the NJ Explorer's Group and traveled across the country. Brian greatly enjoyed fishing, hiking, kayaking, camping and reading his extensive library of books.
Brian was an authentic teacher, beginning his career at St. Pius X School in Loudonville, followed by many years as a 5th grade teacher at Watervliet Elementary School, from which he eventually retired. His students loved Mr. Gent for his sense of humor, genuine connections and many fun projects like hatching chicks, baking bread, hot cocoa breaks and field trips to the Great Escape.
Brian was a lifelong Catholic and a heartfelt supporter of the Traditional Latin Mass. He embraced his neighbor with dignity and respect regularly offering work to those in need, welcoming visitors to share meals and enjoying long conversations with all. Brian delighted in the companionship of his aged mother for many years. He had a great appreciation for the joys of this world and loved introducing those joys to family and friends. Brian also understood the value of prayer and suffering, which he did patiently and without complaint. Brian was very well-read and used his extensive knowledge to teach others. He relished a good debate and especially delighted in challenging others to think more deeply about the catholic faith.
Brian is survived by siblings Michael (Melany) Gent, Maryvonne (Anthony) Grieco and Patrick Gent, along with eight beloved nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his parents, George and Therese Gent, brother Christopher, sister-in-law Elizabeth (Gent) and nephew Jesse (Grieco).
