Colonie – Burton "Burt" H. Bennett, 90, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2014. Born in Albany, he is the son of the late Herbert and Fannie Bennett.
Burt was raised in Rensselaer, and was a 1941 graduate of Van Rensselaer High. He then attended Albany Business School, and worked briefly for General Electric, before enlisting in the United States Naval Reserve from 1942 to 1961. Burt loved to travel, and lived in Alabama, Ohio, and California before returning to Albany. He also loved knitting, gardening, sitting on his porch, talking about anything and everything, and eating at his favorite restaurant "Grandmas". Burt was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Rensselaer, and the American Legion Zaloga Post # 1520.
Burt was predeceased by his sisters; Virginia (Theodore) Schaap, Leona (James) Lungair, Vera (Rudolph) Yeates, and brother Mahlon (Gladys) Bennett. He was also predeceased by his partner of 32 years Merle Bacon, and a nephew Rudolph (Jerilyn) Yeates.
Burt is survived by his nephew Theodore (Donna) Schaap of Clifton Park, and his niece Barbara (Brian) Becker of Schodack. Burt is also survived by many great nieces and nephews, and their children and grandchildren, and special friends; Ann Whitehead, Evelyn Williams, Chuck (Teena) Williams, Jim (Lynda) Jakubiak, Howie (Ruth) Dickson.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Burton's name to the First Presbyterian Church of Rensselaer, 34 Broadway Rensselaer, NY 12144.
Calling hours for Burton will be Friday January 31st from 5:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Prayer services will follow the calling hours at 7:30 p.m. Interment will be at Brant Lake Cemetery in Horicon, NY at a later date.
