Carl Elliott Meacham

September 24, 1941 — September 2, 2018

ALBANY-Carl Elliott Meacham, Ph.D 76, died Sunday, September 2, 2018, in Albany, NY at the Albany Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.

Born September 24, 1941 in Tuscaloosa, AL, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marta Nunez Iribarnegaray; his parents, Matt and Ruth Kate Meacham; four of his siblings, Wilma Meacham Edmonds, Bernard and Adolph Meacham, and Mildred Meacham Williams.

Surviving him are his son, Carl Eduardo Meacham (Karen); and three grandsons, Saul, Sven, and Matias; six siblings, Margaret A. Meacham, Barbara J. Meacham, Mohammed Musau, Jerald Samuel Meacham, Marsha Meacham Williams, and Sherwood D. Meacham; his aunt, Geneva Ball; nieces and nephews, Douglas Edmonds, Sr., Cedric Foster, Gina DeRose, Anu Meacham, Marshay Carter, and Bradford, Jonathan and Jennifer Meacham; and a host of great nieces, nephews and first cousins.

Carl was intellectually curious, which is reflected in the variety of positions he held in his professional life. After graduating from Howard University, he volunteered for the US Peace Corps, serving in the Republic of Liberia in West Africa. After completing his service, he was an educator for several years in the United States Virgin Islands. He next worked at Mary Holmes College in West Point, MS, where he was the Director of Cooperative Education. In addition to other positions, he went on to work on the staff of former Governor Nelson Rockefeller in Albany, NY and at the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare in Washington, DC during the Carter administration. After earning his PhD in political science from the State University of New York College (SUNY) at Albany in 1983, he became a Professor of Political Science at the State University of New York College at Oneonta until his retirement in the early 2000's. He had a distinguished academic career which included authoring countless publications in the most prestigious policy journals, and teaching at the State University of New York at Albany and Cornell University. His research focus was Latin America, particularly the impact of demographic shifts - class, gender and racial- in the public policies of countries in the region. But he is best known for his research on the relationship between the military and the Catholic church during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, which contributed greatly to understanding a difficult period in Chile's history.

When he wasn't working Carl enjoyed spending time with his wife, robust political conversations and a good game of tennis with his son.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful, compassionate staff of the Albany Medical Center. Contributions may be made in memory of Carl Elliott Meacham to the Albany Medical Center.
