Carleton Friebel, 85, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 21, 2010 surrounded by his loving family. Carleton was born in Albany to the late Charles and Mary Adela Friebel. Carleton enlisted into the United States Army and is a WWII veteran having served with the 78th Lightning Division during the "Battle of the Bulge". Carleton retired from the Guilderland Middle School with over 20 years of service. He was an active member of the VFW, the BPOE, The Hamilton Union Presbyterian Church and the Town and Country lanes bowling league. In addition to his parents Carleton was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Donald Schramm.
He was a loving husband, father and grandpa. He was an outdoor lover, enjoying hunting, fishing and camping with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed keeping his garden and growing fresh vegetables.
Carleton is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Shirley Friebel; his sons, Mark C. (Darcy) Friebel of Newark Valley, NY and Todd H. Friebel of Guilderland, NY. He is the loving grandfather of Andrew M. Friebel, Aaron M. Friebel and Laura A. Friebel. He is the beloved brother of Freda Heintz, Dorothy (Robert) Knapp, and Florence (David) Shumway. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be on Thursday at 11:00 am at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave). Calling hours will be Wednesday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the funeral home. Interment will follow the service at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Guilderland.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the Hamilton Union Presbyterian Church, 2291 Western Avenue Guilderland, NY 12084 or to the Guilderland Interfaith food pantry in Carleton's honor.
