LOUDONVILLE – Carlton H. Swanson, 83, passed away on Tuesday, June 7, 2005 at the Albany Medical Center, due to complications from a motor vehicle accident.
Carlton was born on July 12, 1921 in Rome, NY to the late Carl and Irene Zinglein Swanson.
Carlton served in the US Air Force during WWII as a navigator on B-24 bombers, completing 32 missions and volunteering to retrieve damaged planes from Belgium, France, and Germany. He flew during the D-Day invasion. He managed supermarkets in the Capital District until 1957 and co-owned a small supermarket during the 1960's. He then became a sales representative for electrical manufacturers until his retirement in 1989. He retired from the Air Force Reserves as a Lt. Colonel.
He was a member of the Colonie Elks Lodge #2192 B.P.O. E. and St. Matthews Church in Latham. He enjoyed bingo and bowling.
Carlton is survived by his wife of 59 years, Carol Baker Swanson of Loudonville; four children, David (Lenora) Swanson of Elgin, IL, Lisa (Allen) Hibner of Penfield, Alan (Donna) Swanson of Glenmont, and Wendy (Rocco) Swanson of Schenectady; and seven grandchildren, Matthew, Katie, Nicholas, Jenny, Danielle, Justin and Dana; two step grandchildren, Tina and Toni and 6 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Carlton was predeceased by his step mother, Margaret Swanson and a sister, Susan Sweetser.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 12 Noon at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie (Rt. 155 – south of Central Ave.). Interment will follow at Memory's Garden in Colonie. Calling hours will be on Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
