Carol Ann (Chobot) Winkler, formerly of Delmar; 69, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at the Teresian House. Carol had been diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's Disease when she was 53. Carol was born in the Bronx, New York and she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Eleanore Chobot. Carol received her RN from the Miserecordia Hospital School of Nursing in the Bronx. She subsequently received a BS from Hunter College in New York City and an MS from Russell-Sage College of Troy, New York. Carol worked in the nursing field in New York City and the Albany area for over 35 years. She also spent two years at the Convent of the Sisters of Mercy in Tarrytown, New York.
Carol will be missed by her husband of 45 years, Peter C. Winkler of Schroon Lake, NY and her children Jean Onufrak of Fulton, MD and Peter M. Winkler of Prague, the Czech Republic as well as her son-in-law Mark and daughter-in-law Silke. She was also the loving grandmother of Nicholas and Matthew Onufrak of MD and the sister of Suzanne Chobot of GA and John Chobot of Waretown, NJ. Carol also had nine additional nephews and nieces.
Carol taught nursing at the Miserecordia School of Nursing as well as Maria College in Albany. During her career she was employed by the VA Hospital of Albany, Albany Memorial Hospital, the Albany County Dept of Health, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Northeast NY and the New York State Department of Health. Carol was also a member of the Ladies of Charity and taught religious education.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday 9:30am at St. Thomas the Apostle, Delmar. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie. Interment will follow the Mass at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Maria College nursing program for the Carol Winkler scholarship fund.
