Carole A. Hess

November 5, 1946 — November 5, 2021

Hess, Carole A.
SUMMERVILLE, S.C. — Carole A. Hess, 75 of Summerville, S.C. passed away on November 5, 2021, at home with her loving family at her side.

Carole was born in Peekskill, N.Y. on November 5, 1946, to John W. and Ruth R. (Costello) Schmalz. After graduating from high school, she attended secretarial school in New York City. On November 5, 1966, she married Peter A. Hess. They enjoyed 34 years of marriage before his passing in 2000. Carole worked at several companies through the years including Georgia Pacific, The Boy Scouts of America, and the Times Union. While at the Times Union, she decided to further her education by attending Hudson Valley Community College and then graduating from The College of Saint Rose. It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who worked alongside her that Carole was a highly dedicated and honored student. She would eventually be promoted to director of human resources shorty after graduating. Carole was a caring and giving woman. She donated her time to many special interests and charities while at the Times Union including The Special Olympics. She loved helping others attain the tools and support they needed to be successful in whatever avenue they pursued. After retiring from the Times Union in 2011, she moved to Summerville, S.C. to enjoy warmer days.

She loved working on projects around the house with her kids and especially loved spending time with her granddaughter, Taylor. Throughout the years, Carole enjoyed many hobbies including baking, crocheting, gardening, collecting teddy bears, making and selling jewelry at local craft fairs, and most recently running an eBay shop selling candles, lotions, and soaps. No matter what she was doing around the house, she was sure to be listening to music. She loved oldies and sang and danced to them often in her younger years. It was rare to see her sitting idle but when she was, you could be sure she was enjoying a televised golf tournament, a cooking show, HGTV or talent shows like America's Got Talent and American Idol. One of Carole's finest assets was her sense of humor as she brought light and laughter to some of the hardest of situations she had endured, even in her final days here with us.

She was predeceased by her husband, Peter A. Hess; father, John W. Schmalz; mother, Ruth Schmalz; brother, Michael Schmalz and Aunt Marion Costello.

Carole is survived by her three children, Dawn Hess of Rensselaer, Kevin Hess of Summerville, S.C. and Deborah Hess of Clifton Park; son-in-law Paul Hess of Summerville, S.C.; granddaughters, Taylor Hess of Rensselaer, and Rilah Hess of Ballston Lake; many nieces and nephews and friends.

Her family would like to thank the staff at Summerville Medical Center Hospital and Intrepid Hospice for helping us to care for her in her last days. A very special thanks is extended to Paul Hess for his loving care for Carole throughout the last years of her life.

Family and friends are invited to call at New Comer Cremations and Funerals, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie, on Saturday, November 20, from 11 a.m. to 1:30pm. A service will begin at 1:30pm. Interment will follow in Memory Garden's Cemetery in Colonie.
