Carolyn I. Steuhl, 87, of Clifton Park and formerly of Elizaville, NY, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones, on January 28, 2025.
Born in the Bronx on January 8, 1938, to the late Albert and Irma Johnson, Carolyn had an adventurous spirit that shaped her life. In her 20s, she and her sister Alberta embarked on a cross-country road trip, camping and exploring national parks—a journey that sparked a lifelong love of travel. Decades later, she and the love of her life, Frank Ramnitz, fulfilled their shared dream of traveling the country in an RV, spending three unforgettable months exploring breathtaking destinations.
Carolyn’s vibrant personality shone in everything she did. For 30 years, she was the dedicated organist at the Elizaville Methodist Church, filling the sanctuary with music that uplifted the congregation. A proud member of the German-American Club of Albany for 27 years, she served as Financial Secretary, managed hall rentals and event reservations, and was renowned for her famous German potato salad. Even in her later years, she remained active in her community, organizing events and entertainment at The Bentley, where she lived.
Her adventurous spirit never waned. She soared through the skies parasailing in Hawaii, zip-lined through Puerto Rico’s lush landscapes, and traveled across the globe to destinations including the Bahamas, Canada, England, China, the Philippines, Austria, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Italy, and Greece. She passed her love of travel to her children, taking them on countless camping and hiking trips across New England and the East Coast.
A true patron of the arts, Carolyn supported SLOC Musical Theater and found joy in opera, ballet, theater, and symphonies. She was also a talented artist, expressing herself through watercolor painting, ceramics, embroidery, and sewing beautiful holiday dresses for her daughters.
Carolyn’s passion for life was also reflected in her career. One of her most cherished roles was at Pterra Consulting, where she applied her intellect and organizational skills to meaningful work. In addition, she was involved with Future Cities, an educational program that brings STEM to life for students in grades 6 through 8.
Above all, Carolyn cherished her family and friends. She was warm, social, and cultured, leaving a lasting impression on everyone she met.
Carolyn was the beloved wife of the late Frank Ramnitz (2018) and Frederick T. Steuhl (1988). She is survived by her daughter, Laurie Hunt, and granddaughter, Ashley Zollo of Elizaville, NY; daughter, Cheryl Steuhl of Wethersfield, CT; daughter, Nancy Steuhl, and daughter-in-law, Antoinette Doto of Ballston Lake, NY; sister, Joyce Johnson of Hemet, CA; and sister, Lorna DeGrazia of Port St. Lucie, FL.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Carolyn’s life on Saturday, April 26, from 12:30 PM – 6 PM at the German-American Club of Albany, 32 Cherry Street, Albany, NY 12205. Her final resting place will be at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Elizaville, NY, at a later date.
Carolyn will be deeply missed, but her adventurous spirit, artistic legacy, and boundless kindness will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Carolyn’s honor to the German-American Club of Albany or the American Cancer Society https://donate.cancer.org.
